The Programme

Distance

The International Hellenic University’s MSc in Bioeconomy: Biotechnology and Law is designed to develop technological, financial, legal, and managerial expertise and real world skills for students who intend to work in public and private services dealing with the studies, consultation, management, regulation and development of biotechnological products and for those who are already occupied in related areas. The programme is interdisciplinary combining knowledge from heterogeneous scientific fields, such as biology, economy, law and marketing.

The Programme aims are:

  • The provision of knowledge and skills based on the most modern and innovative developments in Biotechnology, directly linked to the field of Bioeconomy
  • The understanding and implementation of the basic regulatory rules and laws governing the production and promotion of biotechnological products, as well as the provision of services directly related to biotechnological applications in the fields of Biomedicine, Genetics and Pharmacy
  • The understanding and implementation of key regulatory rules and legislation related to biosafety issues for humans and the environment
  • The provision of the basic technical and economic knowledge necessary to manage and promote biotechnological products and services
  • The provision of interdisciplinary education in the field of Bioeconomy, which at the same time allows the development of all the skills required in the modern labor market at the international level

IHU Molecular Ecology/Molecular Biology Lab

As part of the MSc in Bioeconomy: Biotechnology and Law and the MSc in Sustainable Agriculture and Business, the International Hellenic University has developed and operates the Molecular Ecology/Molecular Biology Lab in the IHU premises. The lab is equipped with state-of-the-art, modern equipment for advanced research on the fields of molecular biology, molecular ecology, environmental microbiology, microbial taxonomy and functional diversity, metagenomics, metatranscriptomics and nucleic acids research. Also, the laboratory will be used for educational purposes for the students of the MSc in Bioeconomy: Biotechnology and Law and the MSc in Sustainable Agriculture and Business , and related educational programmes, for work done in the context of research-based master theses and Ph.D. theses, and for national and international research collaborations. It includes, among other equipment, PCR cycler, centrifuges, electrophoresis apparatus, pH-meter, orbital shaker, microplate reader, spectrophotometer, water-bath, autoclave, and a biosafety level 2 cabinet.#IHUBioLab

Dissertations 2019-2020

Students of the IHU MSc in Bioeconomy: Biotechnology and Law have started their dissertation research projects in the Molecular Ecology Lab of Thermi’s facilities under the supervision of the Programme’s Academic Associate, Dr. Savvas Genitsaris. In particular, their projects concern: (a) the investigation of the plankton community of Thessaloniki Bay with morphological and molecular markers (Lydia-Effrosyni Athanasiou), and (b) the investigation of the community structure of rhizo- and phyllosphere bacterial assemblages in tomato cultivars of Santorini Island via bioinformatic analysis of 16S rRNA gene amplicons (Ntinos Eleftheriadis).

Ideal Career path

The graduates of the programme will be equipped with specialist expertise and high-level cognitive skills to become autonomous/self-directed professionals or find employment in consulting, policy and management roles in the sectors of biotechnological product development, regulation, management and marketing. Career opportunities may be found in:

  • Biotechonological product enterprises of various sizes
  • Cooperatives and industries of the biotechnology sector
  • NGOs involved in bioethics and biosafety policy, rural development and environmental protection
  • Government and local/rural agencies
  • Research institutes
  • National and international organizations active in bioproduct regulation and marketing
  • Consulting agencies and environmental law firms

The Dissertation

The dissertation is an individual project of original scientific work. The subject is chosen from a list of topics suggested by a faculty member, who acts as a supervisor. Alternatively, students may choose a research-based dissertation of 12 months duration. In this case, a reduction in tuition fees may be awarded.

Programme Duration

In the case of a standard dissertation, the duration is 1.5 years full-time. If the dissertation is research-based, the programme lasts 2 years full-time. Part-time mode is also available.

Programme Schedule

Distance Learning

Teaching methods are based on learner-centered education standards and involve:

(a) face-to-face or classroom based learning (students will be required to be physically present at the University for one or two days at the beginning of each semester)

(b) asynchronous learning (students will use online learning resources and will be assessed through a variety of diagnostic tools and formative assessment techniques)

(c) synchronous learning (‘teleconferences’ and virtual meetings will be held regularly during each semester) and

(d) summative assessment (students will be required to be physically present at the University for the final exams at the end of each semester).
